International Day of Happiness

International Day of Happiness

“Your happiness is part of something bigger” proclaims the United Nations

We at GayWhistler agree! We will be out volunteering our time, helping to place a smile on someone’s face. One of my favorite social media shares is the I Like You Alien as shown below. Click on the graphic to be “Liked” we are sure it will place a smile on your face. What will you be doing on this International Day of Happiness?

THE U.N. INTERNATIONAL DAY OF HAPPINESS

The General Assembly of the United Nations has proclaimed 20 March the International
Day of Happiness, recognising the relevance of happiness and well-being as universal
goals and aspirations in the lives of human beings around the world and the importance
of their recognition in public policy objectives. The UN invites member states and their
citizens to observe the International Day of Happiness in an appropriate manner,
including through education and public awareness-raising activities.

Northern Lights

Northern Lights above Whistler Village

A rare but dazzling appearance of the Aura Borealis in the sky above Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains

Having lived in Whistler for nearly two decades I have been fortunate enough to have been able to play witness to some pretty spectacular cosmic events from Whistler village. 1997 was one of those incredible years where the Northern Lights, also known as the Aura Borealis, came out to play on several summer nights as did the incredible Comet Hale-Bopp that lasted for months in the summer sky of Whistler.

This past week, just in time for St. Patrick’s day the Northern Lights came out in full force and put on a dazzling cosmic display for the night owls. Breakfast Television (BT Vancouver / CityTV) was able to obtain stunning time-lapse video of the Aura Borealis.

Whistler Pride 2015

Whistler Pride 2015 through the lens of Jackson Photografix

An incredible line up of talent made for some great images for Whistler Pride 2015

The eight day festival that celebrated diversity both on and off the slopes of Whistler made for some exciting and beautiful images at Whistler Pride 2015. GayWhistler’s staff photographer, Jackson Photografix, captured some amazing shots that give you a glimpse back to some of the magic at the annual Gay and Lesbian Ski/Snowboard week January 24-31, 2015.

Snowball – the Main event at Whistler Pride 2015

This year Snowball, the main event and closing party of the eight day festival saw incredible talent with DJ Landon James opening the night and the incredibly positive and happy energy of the headliner: THE FREEMASONS took everyone on a wonderful journey only to be handed off to DJ DEL STAMP to close the night off with incredible gusto. The BIG ROGER GO GO Gods and the beautifully crafted visuals by SHOWMAX kept the energy up and exciting.

Chickalicious – the women’s Main event at Whistler Pride 2015

Celebrating the 5th annual Whistler Pride March + Skiout

During the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver/Whistler – GayWhistler produced the first Olympic and Paralympic Pride House, a pavilion that celebrated LGBT culture, sports and human rights. It was through Pride House we were able to raise awareness of homophobia and transphobia within sports and create a global conversation on LGBT marginalization within sports. During the Olympics two official Olympic sports TV networks made disparaging and homophobic remarks against US Olympic Figure Skater, Johnny Weir. Pride House led the first Gay Pride March in Whistler to the official Whistler Olympic Media centre and held an international press conference to defend John Wier. 2015 celebrated the 5th anniversary of this historic march.

Splash Pool Party with NICK BERTOSSI

An incredible night of splashing, swimming, soaking and dancing poolside to a spectacular set by Vancouver’s own DJ Nick Bertossi!

Throwback Thursday with DJ QUEST

Our retro party was a huge success! DJ Quest delivered a totally radical retro boogie set for a fun crowd who shook their groove thing all night long!

Better Together – Pride Banquet benefiting Rainbow Refugee

Guests got their fill of great entertainment and delicious food at the Whistler Pride Banquet. The evening included a silent auction, the presentation of the official Whistler Pride Proclamation by the Mayor Nancy Wilhelm-Morden. Attendees were treated to a beautifully moving piece by the evening’s beneficiary Rainbow Refugee Committee, a comical sketch by the Whistler Pride Mountain guides and a hysterical half-hour of standup by comedian/actor Darcy Michael. Vancouver drag legend Joan-E emceed the night and provided us with a delightful three song after dinner performance!
