New Hotel making a Buzz in Whistler

FAIRMONT CHATEAU WHISTLER BUILDS POLLINATOR BEE HOTEL TO SUPPORT SUSTAINABLE URBAN FOOD PRODUCTION

New hotel making a buzz in Whistler – Bee hotel one of 16 across Canada built in partnership with Burt’s Bees to provide safe habitat for solitary bees to rest and reproduce –

WHISTLER, BC June 2, 2015 – There is a new hotel in town and it has been constructed in the rooftop garden of the Fairmont Chateau Whistler. One of a kind, and specially designed to attract solitary pollinator bees, the Fairmont Chateau Whistler’s new bee hotel will provide much needed urban habitat for these tiny creatures that pollinate a significant amount of the food produced in British Columbia.

Unlike honeybees, which live in group hives, solitary bees nest on their own, often in hollow branches and sticks, while foraging to feed their young. Loss and fragmentation of habitat leaves hundreds of thousands of bees without space to nest each year, and without a safe place to lay eggs.

Fairmont Chateau Whistler’s new bee hotel will provide a safe habitat for solitary bees to ‘check-in’ and help to sustain the next generation of urban pollinators. It is one of 16 built across the country this spring thanks to the WILD FOR BEES partnership which includes Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, Burt’s Bees Canada, Pollinator Partnership Canada and Sustainable TO. Building + Architecture.

“Solitary bees are a critical part of sustainable urban food production and habitat loss is a real impediment to bees’ ability to pollinate much of the food we rely on across Canada,” said Jane Mackie, vice president, Fairmont Brand. “By building these bee hotels from coast to coast, we are doing our part to build a more sustainable world.”

For more than a decade, through its Bee Sustainable initiative, which is part of the luxury hotel brand’s larger Fairmont Sustainability Partnership program, Fairmont has committed itself to improving the overall health and conservation of bee species globally, and has built more than 20 apiaries and eight pollinator bee hotels at properties around the world.

Fairmont Chateau Whistler has been a local leader in bee sustainability since June 2013 when the rooftop garden became home for 120,000 honeybees who lived within four hives. Now there are 12 hives residing on the rooftop, currently housing over 180,000 honeybees, which will grow to around 300,000 by the end of the summer season.

To celebrate the installation of the new bee hotel, Fairmont Chateau Whistler will be highlighting pollinator-inspired menu items throughout the month of June and Burt’s Bees lip balms will be on sale on property.

Furthermore, the hotel is encouraging all Sea to Sky residents to consider installing a small bee hotel in their backyard to help blanket the region with safe spaces for bees to reproduce. Despite common misconceptions, solitary bees are very small and often undetectable, simply laying eggs, pollinating flowers and plants and continuing on their way once their eggs are hatched. Those interested in building a bee hotel can reference this handy how-to guide.

The 16 new bee hotels built in 2015 include six located at Fairmont properties in Vancouver, Whistler, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa and Quebec City and ten in public spaces across the country in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and Halifax. This year’s coast-to-coast program follows the successful launch of the bee hotel program in 2014, when the first pollinator bee hotel debuted atop the iconic Fairmont Royal York along with four others across the Greater Toronto Area.

Pride House

Pride House Vancouver set to open at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup

PrideHouse FIFA Vancouver 2015April 27, 2015 – (Vancouver, BC) The founder of the original 2010 Olympic Winter Games Pride House is gearing up to open a Pride House in the heart of Vancouver’s Davie Village from June 26th to July 5th for the final ten days of the FIFA Women’s World Cup. The World Cup is being hosted in various Canadian cities including Vancouver where the final match will be played on Sunday, July 5th.

Dean Nelson, along with business partner Sunil Sinha, will be working hard this spring and summer to engage various LGBT sports, arts and community groups to be part of the excitement of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup. “During the 2010 Olympics, when we had created Pride House, it was incredible to see so many groups come together under the umbrella of Pride House to participate openly and authentically at the games. We are hopeful that we will be able to bring some of that energy to the heart of Vancouver’s Davie Village, this summer, as the city hosts the grand finale of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup,” explains Pride House founder, Dean Nelson. “We know and see that there is still so much work to be done, within sports, to make the locker room and playing fields safer for our athletes and fans. There have been some incredible strides in the past five years in the sports world, where more athletes feel safe in coming out, to be authentic to themselves and to their team mates and fans. Unfortunately at the same time we have seen what happened in Sochi at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, and recently the disappointing American legislation of the ‘Religious Restoration Freedom Act’ designed to harm the GSM (Gender + Sexual Minority) community.”

Lou Englefield, director of Pride Sports UK and producer of the London 2012 Olympic Summer Games Pride House, goes on to explain the importance and visibility of Pride House in Vancouver. “Women’s football is often forgotten in the campaign against LGBTQphobia and we assume women’s sport is a safe place for all. There is still work to be done around the world, however, to ensure that LGBTQ women are welcomed and celebrated in the women’s game. Pride House is a concept which contributes to this effort by ensuring that LGBTQ people have a place and can be visible at world class events. We are delighted that Vancouver will be hosting a Pride House at this year’s WWC; the first Pride House at a major women’s tournament.”

Pride House Vancouver will be located within the heart of Vancouver’s gay village. The organizers are working with Jenn Mickey, local business owner, in creating a fresh, new and exciting space within the Westend of Vancouver. Organizers anticipate having approximately 70 hours of programming, over the ten days, and are now accepting programming ideas and talent as well as sponsor/donor opportunities.

About Pride House:

Pride House is a pavilion in which to celebrate sport and to provide a seed bed for creating a dialogue on homophobia within sport as well as homophobia/transphobia in general. The pavilion is a safe and inclusive space for GSM (Gender + Sexual Minorities) to be able to come together and take in the match, experience various queer arts and culture, and to connect with other like-minded people. Pride House was instrumental in creating the opportunity for the International Olympic Committee to update Principle 6 to include sexual orientation under their non discrimination policy. We are proud that Pride House and the Pride House movement is a legacy from the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

Past + Future Pride Houses:

2010 – Vancouver Olympic Winter Games
2012 – Poland + Ukraine Euro Cup
2012 – London Olympic Summer Games
2014 – Sochi Olympic Winter Games (Russian government denied pavilion;
global remote Pride Houses initiated in solidarity instead)
2014 – Sao Paulo FIFA Men’s World Cup
2014 – Glasgow Commonwealth Games
2015 – Vancouver FIFA Women’s World Cup
2015 – Toronto Pan American Games
2016 – Rio Olympic Summer Games

Retro WHOOSSH

A decade of WHOOSSH comes to an end… Retro WHOOSSH will sashay away

A look back at WHOOSSH over the decade and interview with Peter Dinz, founder of WHOOSSH

It is hard to believe that WHOOSSH is already grown up to be 10 years old already. I remember like it was yesterday when the spark of WHOOSSH began. Whistler had a gay social club that went back to the 90’s called QINTM – Queers In The Mountain. It was pretty low key and very much on the down low. I remember first reaching out to the club back in 1994, I was met by two people from the club in a very public space. This was for the safety of both them and me as we still lived in a bit of fear that we could be bashed or even outted. This club went along for a few years until the main organizer left Whistler and moved to Victoria. Nothing really happened until Peter Dinz sashayed his way up to Whistler and started skiOUT, a Vancouver/Whistler LGBT Ski Club in 1999.

Peter Dinz reflects on how WHOOSSH began, “There was a small group of gay friends and every one

WHOOSSH Whistler 2007
Yuletide WHOOSSH 2007

knew where each one worked and we would say hi on the stroll but there was not a place were gay and lesbian Whistler’ites could meet for a drink. And if you working in Whistler for the season, there was no place to meet other LGBT friends. Remember, 10 years ago there was no “social apps”. We needed a gathering place, I had the ability to get the word OUT via the SkiOUT LGBT Ski and board group.”

The main motivation for skiOUT to create WHOOSSH was to create a safe place for local, seasonal, and visiting like minded LGBT people to meet and socialize. The club wanted to be sure to give back to the community so there would always be a fundraising aspect to the WHOOSSH parties. In doing so, this would help build awareness that LGBT people actually live and work in Whistler year round.

Finding a Venue for WHOOSSH

WHOOSSH Dave Keen at Southside Diner
Southside Diner Co-Owner, Dave Keen (R) with WHOOSSH attendee (L)

Peter explains how the iconic creekside “Southside Diner” became home to WHOOSSH for this past decade. “We had no idea how many people would come to WHOOSSH, or who would close their doors for our private party on a Saturday night. One of the local gay guys (Dave Keen) bought into the Southside Diner, I approached him about closing his restaurant one Saturday night a month (not an easy request) and he IMMEDIATELY said “YES, let’s do it” and the Southside Diner has the been the official residence of WHOOSSH since then.” The primary WHOOSSH team of Peter Dinz, Peter Blitz (Speedee Pete), and Fred Hanley took charge along with countless skiOUT volunteers to help bring the magic of WHOOSSH alive.

Fondest Memory of WHOOSSH

Looking back over the past ten years what was one or some of the highlights I asked Peter? “There have been so many; Our very first WinterPRIDE WHOOSSH party, meeting so many new friends from Whistler, Vancouver and around the world! Impromptu dance parties, the purple pond afterparties, a long-time WHOOSSH’er donating $10,000 to A Loving Spoonful on behalf of WHOOSSH, but the one the stands out for me was at WinterPRIDE WHOOSSH #9 (2014) at Merlins, when the amazing Ms Willie and DJ Smoothie on his sax, did a duet to Patti’s Labelles “Somewhere over the rainbow” I have never heard the crowd go that nuts for any performance, it was magic and amazing! I actually thought the windows in Merlins were going to shatter…LOL” What is your hope or legacy you would like to see with WHOOSSH, I ask Peter, “For everyone to remember that WHOOSSH was the place they met Walt or Anna or Michael or Rohan or Tash or Peter, and raised $70,000 and awareness for so many LGBT charities. It really was community party!”

WHOOSSH Donations have tallied over $70,000 helping many organizations

Over the past decade WHOOSSH has helped many very deserving charities some of them include:
AIDS Vancouver, A Loving Spoonful, H.I.M., Camp Moomba, AIDS Vancouver, People with AIDS (BC Positive Living), McLaren House, OUT in School, EGALE, Teachers without Boarders, Whistler Animals Galore (WAG) ,Okanagan Pride Society, Canadian Cancer Society, East Side Pride, Whistler Medical Clinic, McLaren Housing Society, and so many more. One of skiOUT’s dearest charities is Camp Moomba. Camp Moomba is a summer camp for children living with or effected by HIV/AIDS. The final WHOOSSH, Retro WHOOSSH on Saturday, April 25th will benefit 100% of proceeds to this very deserving charity.

High on Life

High on Life Spring Skiing at Whistler Blackcomb

Spectacular Spring weather means nearly naked snowboarding!

High on Life Naked SnowboarderYou never know what you may find on YouTube. Recently I discovered High on Life a group of guys from Vancouver, with an epic travel channel, great eye candy and fantastic stories… now one of my favorite channels on YouTube!

Usually the High on Life boyz are gallivanting around the global, but just this week they took time out to experience a little bit of magic in their own backyard and went up to Whistler during the World Ski and Snowboard festival and took in some of the incredible Spring conditions on this award winning mountain.

I was very impressed with the skill they have in sharing their experience and how amazing Blackcomb mountain truly is. I can understand now why these High on Life boyz are an industry of their own. You can get totally swept away wanting to see more. Their closing credit of the short video was taken at one of my favorite slope side hotels, the Coast Blackcomb Suites at Whistler – a Whistler Pride preferred partner. Enjoy the video below!

Lodging Ovations

Lodging Ovations the perfect WHOOSSH Weekend Retreat

Three beautiful Creekside Properties: Legends, Evolution and First Tracks Lodge

Now that the hustle and bustle of the winter season at Whistler Blackcomb starts to fade away, the charming community of Creekside is a great Spring location for your mini mountain escape. At the base of Whistler Mountain Lodging Ovations has three beautiful properties to call home. One of my favorites is Evolution.

Evolutions’s tag line “modern take on mountain lodging”, really does live up to the luxurious nature of this Creekside gem. You have a choice of 1, 2 and 3-bedroom suites perfect for sharing with friends. Evolution, like her sister Lodging Ovations hotels, are all within walking distance of the Southside Diner, home of the final WHOOSSH cocktail party. It is also close to all the hiking and biking trails and within a minute’s walk to the beautiful Spa at Nita Lake, Loka Yoga Studio, Base Camp Fitness and the Whistler Creek Athletic Club to keep you fit and looking your best.

Lodging Ovations Cooks!

All of the Lodging Ovations properties have full kitchens so this means you can make dinner at home, or… your “Whistler home” similar to Vancouver foodie Marc Smith! If you are like me on the other hand, I will be taking full advantage of the kitchen more to play bartender!

and yes… Lodging Ovations has a Pool and hot tubs!

Of course after a long day skiing, snowboarding, hiking or biking – it is always so good to sit back and chill at one of the pools and hot tubs.

Earth Hour

Whistler marks Earth Hour on March 28

Residents and businesses invited to participate and power down

March 25, 2015: Whistler, B.C. − On March 28 from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., the Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) will celebrate Earth Hour by turning off non-essential lights and “powering down,” while encouraging local residents, visitors and businesses to do the same. The municipality will also be hosting a special candlelight skate at Whistler Olympic Plaza from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Mayor Nancy Wilhelm-Morden said, “I invite all residents, visitors and businesses to power down and find creative ways of reducing energy consumption during Earth Hour on March 28. Earth Hour demonstrates the impact of our collective efforts to reduce our electricity consumption, and it is our hope, of course, that some of these simple changes extend beyond Earth Hour.”

Last year, Whistler reduced electrical power consumption by six per cent: the highest savings of all 69 communities registered in British Columbia. You can help Whistler keep the top spot on B.C.’s Earth Hour podium in 2015.

Here are some fun ideas for celebrating Earth Hour:

Head outside and gaze at the stars (weather permitting, of course);
Host a candlelit or LED headlamp-lit dinner for friends and family;
Camp out with the kids on the living room floor; or
Enjoy a special candlelight skate at Whistler Olympic Plaza.

British Columbians can extend Earth Hour into every day through simple conservation actions including:
Hanging clothes to dry;
Turning down the heat – especially when not at home; and
Choosing ENERGY STAR products when upgrading lighting, appliances, and electronic equipment. From now until the end of April, BC Hydro is partnering with retailers across the province to offer instant rebates and other incentives.

BC Hydro provides tools, resources and incentives to help people conserve year-round. Visit bchydro.com/powersmart for tips on how to be smart with your power, and find more information about Earth Hour in B.C. on BC Hydro’s website.

Whistler’s community energy monitoring

Whistler’s community-wide annual electricity consumption for 2014 decreased from 2013 levels by an estimated 5.3 per cent, and the commercial sector decreased by 6.7 per cent, representing estimated savings of more than $120,000 across the commercial sector alone.

Energy conservation continues to be the foundation of the RMOW’s approach to climate responsibility. Whistler is committed to energy tracking and year-round energy conservation. Read more about Whistler’s energy performance and find energy saving tips for your home, transportation or business.

About Earth Hour

Earth Hour was founded by the World Wildlife Fund in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, when 2.2 million individuals and more than 2,000 businesses turned their lights off for one hour to draw attention to energy consumption and climate change. Earth Hour is an opportunity for communities to raise awareness about energy consumption and climate change, while taking steps to conserve energy. Earth Hour also provides a chance to celebrate making a commitment to our planet beyond the hour. This will mark the eighth year that Whistler participates in Earth Hour.
