Rainbow Refugee

Rainbow Refugee at Whistler Pride

Rainbow Refugee hits the slopes of Whistler Blackcomb to help save Queer and HIV+ Refugees in countries of conflict

This year the Whistler PRIDE and Ski Festival is proud to work with Rainbow Refugee as the festival’s primary beneficiary. Rainbow Refugee is a social support group that assists lesbian, gay, bi, trans, queer, HIV+ people that have recently immigrated or in the process of seeking asylum/ refugee status from a country of conflict to a sanctuary city like Vancouver. Funds raised help claimants begin a fresh start in a supportive and inclusive destination. Funds also are used to help with the cost of providing workshops for various organizations in better understanding the unique refugee claims and the special care needed in processing the refugee. For instance if a person is escaping Uganda for LGBT persecution housing the claimant with other Ugandans could result in mental and physical assault.

We are collecting prizing for the Charity Ski Race as well as silent auction items for the Whistler Pride Banquet to help raise much needed funds to support the important humanitarian efforts of Rainbow Refugee.

If you could contribute in any way to the auction, it would help us to continue to make strides towards a stronger, healthier community. Donations are greatly appreciated. If you are unable to make donation suitable for the silent auction or prizing for the ski race we would also appreciate smaller items for volunteer recognition as we have a large dedicated volunteer base, that work hard to support Whistler Pride.

Donated gifts, prizes and auction items will be featured on whistlerpride.com. Higher valued items will be given more prominent exposure throughout the week of Whistler Pride starting at the Welcome reception on Sunday, January 25th at the Westin Resort & Spa from 4-7PM, and then on display at the Apres Ski events from Monday, January 26 – Thursday, January 29th and final display and acknowledgement at the Whistler Pride Banquet, Thursday, January 29th from 7:30-10PM.

If you would like to make a donation please complete the form below or contact us at: [email protected]

Tennessee Queer

After a few years up north in New York, out and proud Jason Potts returns to his Tennessee hometown only to find things have not changed for the LGBT teenagers. Being gay is still the worst thing to be in Smyth, Tennessee. Wanting to help the gay teenagers in a small way, Jason hatches a plan to them some hope while he’s home for the weekend. Things quickly spiral out of control and Jason is put in charge of the first ever gay pride parade in the sleepy small southern town.

Unknown to Jason, a scheming conservative city councilman is working with a holier-than-thou minister to round up the gay teenagers after the parade and send them off to an ex-gay ministry camp to be cured of their sinful ways.

The LA Weekly says Tennessee Queer “What a sweet, charming film!” The Commercial Appeal “Call it Mayberry LGBT” and the Dallas Voice reviews “a sweet-natured comedy with heart.”

The Whistler Pride and Ski Festival is proud to present Tennessee Queer along with presenting sponsors OUTtv and GayDirect.

Wax Your Skis

Wax your skis – WHISTLER BLACKCOMB OPENING AHEAD OF SCHEDULE SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 22

Cold Temperatures Make Early Opening Possible

WHISTLER, BC November 18, 2014 – Much to the delight of eager skiers and snowboarders, Whistler Blackcomb will be opening five days ahead of schedule on Saturday, November 22. The decision to kick off the winter season early was made possible after natural snowfall at higher elevations was followed by a streak of below average temperatures, providing prime conditions for snowmaking.

“Our snowmaking team has been working hard to take advantage of this early season cold snap in Whistler and has converted over 60 million gallons of water into snow over the past few weeks,” says Doug MacFarlane, Director of Mountain Operations at Whistler Blackcomb. “Their efforts, combined with the natural snowfall we have already received at higher elevations, has enabled us to get things rolling early again this year. And with more natural snow in the forecast for later this week, it should be a fun opening weekend.”

Wax your skis, Whistler Mountain will be opening five days ahead of schedule on Saturday, November 22 with five lifts running. Guests will have the option to upload from either the base of Whistler Mountain via the Whistler Village Gondola, featuring brand new cabins, or the Creekside base via the Creekside Gondola. Blackcomb Mountain will open, as scheduled, on Thursday, November 27, 2014.

“With all the excitement of opening day, we want to remind guests early season conditions will apply, especially off piste,” says MacFarlane. “It is important to obey all mountain signage, ski and ride on open runs only and stay within the operational area marked by ‘Temporary Boundary’ signage.”

First upload on the Whistler Village Gondola and Creekside Gondola will begin at 8:30am, with last upload at 2pm on November 22, with mandatory download off the mountain. Emerald Express, Big Red Express and the Franz Chair lifts will be running, allowing access to 1800 vertical feet of skiing and riding terrain. Runs set to open include Upper and Lower Ego Bowl, Upper Whiskey Jack, Upper Franz’s, Papoose, Orange Peel and Pony Trail. There will also be a small terrain park accessible from the top of the Emerald Express chair and green learning terrain serviced by a Super Carpet at Olympic Station. Guests can keep updated on the most current lift status information at WhistlerBlackcomb.com or from mobile devices via the Whistler Blackcomb LIVE app.

Opening day guests will have the first chance to experience the brand new Whistler Village Gondola cabins installed this fall. The new Sigma “Diamond” level walk-in cabins dramatically improve the experience for skiers, snowboarders, and sightseers with eight passengers able to sit comfortably on bench seating. The new cabin configuration also gives guests the option of bringing their ski/snowboard equipment inside with them or storing it themselves in the outside racks provided.

Opening day will be the first time skiers and riders at Whistler Blackcomb will experience the benefits of the newly introduced RFID technology around the mountains, including mountain access gates at most lifts. Guests are reminded to store their new RFID Access Cards in a left-side pocket away from cell phones, credit cards and foil in order to reduce signal interference at the access gates. For more information about RFID at Whistler Blackcomb, visit www.whistlerblackcomb.com/rfid.

Whistler Mountain dining locations set to open on November 22 include Essentially Blackcomb Cappuccino Bar and Garbo’s Grill in the Carleton Lodge, Dusty’s Bar & Grill and Dusty’s Backside in Creekside, the Roundhouse Lodge on Whistler Mountain, and the Garibaldi Lift Co., Whistler’s world-famous location for après.

Mountain Safety

Mountain Safety for Skiing and Snowboarding

The Canada West Ski Areas Association (CWSAA) has shared a new mountain safety video called Respect, aimed at bringing the key issues of mountain safety to young skiers and riders. Mountain safety is a key priority at resorts across North America. Respect aims to reengage the skiing and riding community in three pillars of mountain safety in a way that is both relevant and tangible – respect for yourself, respect for others, and respect for the mountain.

“We are extremely pleased with the new Respect video,” says David Lynn, President & CEO of Canada West Ski Areas Association. “Our previous Respect video was beginning to lose relevancy within our target market. We wanted to refresh the content, enabling us to deliver vital mountain safety communications in a way that resonates with skiers and riders across Canada. Working with Whistler Blackcomb allowed us to feature some of the best athletes of the industry, in real-life situations that we all can relate to. At the end of the day we want people to understand that consequences are real.”

Respect was filmed at Whistler Blackcomb and features Olympic ski cross gold medalist, Ashleigh McIvor; Olympic halfpipe silver medalist, Mike Riddle; and other professional skiers and snowboarders including Joe Schuster, Robin Van Gyn and Mack Jones, in real-life, on-mountain scenarios. Respect reminds skiers and riders to know their limits and play within them, because the consequences are real. Mountain Safety is everyone’s responsibility.
