Never Ever Days

NEVER EVER DAYS RETURN TO WHISTLER BLACKCOMB JANUARY 17 & 18

450 Adults New To Skiing/Snowboarding Will Receive a Lesson, Lift Ticket, Rental Gear & Après For Only $25

WHISTLER, BC January 12, 2015 – The Whistler Blackcomb Snow School’s wildly popular Never Ever Days will make a return to the slopes of Whistler Blackcomb January 17 and 18. The annual event has become a key part of the Snow School’s effort to encourage growth in the sport of skiing and snowboarding. Open to 450 beginner adult skiers and riders (ages 19 and up), the program will include a one day Max4 lesson, lift ticket, ski or board rental, and après at the Garibaldi Lift Company (GLC) for only $25. The event is on sale now and is expected to sell out very quickly.

“Now in its fourth winter, Never Ever Days has introduced over 1500 adults to skiing and snowboarding,” says Bartosz Barczynski, General Manager of Adult Ski and Snowboard School at Whistler Blackcomb. “It is wonderful to see adults fall in love with these winter sports for the first time here at our resort. It is true, you are never too old to learn or to try something new. We hope the Never Ever Days program continues to inspire people to play in the mountains and keeps the ski and snowboard communities strong for years to come.”
Each Never Ever Days participant will receive access to exclusive deals on ski and snowboard equipment at participating Whistler Blackcomb retail locations and a $25 voucher which can be applied to a future lesson. Those participants who are hooked after their introduction to the sport will have the option to purchase an additional two-day lesson, lift ticket and rental package for only $180, which the $25 voucher can be applied toward, reducing the price to $155 plus applicable taxes.

Guest can find out more information about the Never Ever Days program and register to participate online at www.whistlerblackcomb.com/learn. This is a great way to get out on the slopes ahead of Whistler Pride and learn to do a few turns!

As an additional effort to get newcomers sliding on the slopes, Whistler Blackcomb will continue to run Discover Whistler Days over the rest of the winter season, offering 25 per cent off select adult, teen and kids’ snow school group lessons, equating to an approximate savings of $50 per program. The dates of Discover Whistler Days are January 19- February 1, March 2 – March 13 and April 13 – April 19. Guests looking for information about the Whistler Blackcomb Snow School or to book a lesson can visit www.whistlerblackcomb.com or call 1-866.787.1966.

The New York Times describes the Canadian ski town of Whistler, “… North America’s most cosmopolitan ski resort.” As you sashay your way through the lift line you hear Brazilians, Chinese, Russian, Japanese, Brits, Aussies, Kiwis, Afrikaans and it is no wonder then that Whistler’s Gay Ski Week welcomes the gay boys and girls from 26+ countries.

Celebrating 23 years of diversity on the slopes of Whistler Blackcomb, the annual ski week has a fresh new name – the Whistler Pride and Ski Festival, January 24-31, 2015.

The eight-day festival combines sports, culinary, wellness, social and cultural events.

5 Surprising To-Dos in Whistler

5 Surprising To-Dos in Whistler

By Mary-Colleen Jenkins

#1 Waffles at the Crystal Hut

Technically this is a ski-based activity, but we heard about the legendary waffles at the Crystal Hut on our second day at Whistler and, sadly, never managed to eat one.

The tiny lodge on Blackcomb Mountain was absolutely packed when we went in and, from the smell of the waffles floating in the air, we understood why.

Next time? We’re skipping breakfast on our first day and heading straight up the mountain to Crystal Hut before the crowds converge!

Dean at GayWhistler can verify – The Waffels are amazing! Arrive early as the Crystal Hut gets crazy busy as the day continues. Side note: Canadian Snowmobile also does night fondue dinners at the Crystal which is also worth checking out.

The Crystal Hut: www.whistlerblackcomb.com

#2 Dog Sledding

Dog sledding is the quintessential Canadian experience and several operations in Whistler make it easy for tourists to get a taste of one of the oldest forms of transportation in the world.

Guided tours last up to three hours and include education on harnessing and staging the dogs, interpreting the musher’s vocal commands and, for the adventurous, a chance to drive the dogs yourself.

After your ride, you might even get a chance to mingle with the next generation of working dogs: the puppies!

Canadian Wilderness Adventures: www.canadianwilderness.com
Blackcomb Dogsled: www.blackcombdogsled.com

#3 Winter Ziplining

Skiing and dog sledding get you right into the heart of the mountains, but ziplining offers a completely different experience: soaring above inaccessible terrain through old-growth forest.

Ziplines are more and more popular these days, but how many places offer you a high-altitude experience of zipping through the snow-covered trees on a bluebird day? It’s a winter person’s fantasy!

Two major companies operate from Whistler-Blackcomb, and each has a unique take on the art of ziplining. Each outfitter also offers several options for adventure – imagine stepping off a platform and zipping through the skies at night!

Dean at GayWhistler says: “Without a doubt this is one of my fav experiences. Where else can you race through the forest like a Jedi Knight or Indiana Jones. SuperFly has been a Whistler Pride partner for the last three years.”

Superfly Ziplines: www.superflyziplines.com
Ziptrek Ecotours: www.ziptrek.com/whistler-canada

#4 Biathlon

One of the most interesting sports in the Winter Olympics is the biathlon. It’s incredible how the athletes are able to ski at such a heart-thumping pace and then calm themselves down enough to hit a target five times before sprinting off to do it all over again.

The Whistler Olympic Park in the Callaghan Valley, built for the Vancouver Olympics in 2010, offers newbies the chance to test their aim on the biathlon course.

Never fired a rifle before? That’s okay. The Park offers individual, semi-private and family lessons. You can choose your preferred type of skiing (classic or skate), and an instructor will take you out for a two-hour lesson.

Whistler Olympic Park: www.whistlerolympicpark.com

#5 Bobsleigh

This is another Olympic sport that I don’t fully understand, and, to be honest, I’m not sure that I really want to try it so much as to see it up close. The Whistler Sliding Centre allows visitors to try it (if they’re brave enough) or to watch (if they’re not).

If you are adventurous enough to give it a go, the team at the Sliding Centre will take you on an experience of a lifetime. They will guide you through everything, from being appropriately outfitted, to track etiquette and a mock run, before hitting the track with a professional pilot at the helm.

If hitting the final curve at 75 miles per hour isn’t enough to assuage your need for speed, then you can always try skeleton at the Sliding Centre, too!

Dean at GayWhistler says: “Best Roller Coaster Ride ever! It is quite exciting to be hitting a couple G’s as you hit Thunderbird Corner. How often can you say you got to ride the Olympic Sliding course? A must do.”

World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day is December 1st

Vancouver has much to be proud of this December 1st as we reflect on our global fight on HIV/AIDS. AIDS Vancouver was the first Canadian organization to mobilize thirty one years ago helping patients, family, friends, workers and governments to understand this virus and how to create better lives for those living with or effected by HIV/AIDS. AIDS Vancouver this year is rolling out a new campaign #UNDETECTABLEthe New Face of HIV. Educating and creating a conversation about living with HIV

There have been tremendous breakthroughs in HIV treatment in the last decade, Today, living with HIV can mean different things – there is a spectrum of outcomes ranging from very poor to excellent. With advancements in antiretroviral (ARV) therapies, there is now a new group of people living with HIV who are undetectable, meaning they have very little virus in their blood. As a result, most of these individuals have a non-compromised immune system, will live a normal lifespan, and are very unlikely to transmit the virus sexually after six months with an undetectable viral load.
