Whistler Cornucopia

Whistler Cornucopia – Celebration of
Food + Drink Nov. 6-16, 2014

This fall the schedule for Cornucopia, Whistler’s Celebration of Food + Drink presented by BlueShore Financial highlight tried and true festival favourites alongside the fresh and new.

Organizers have been hard at work all summer, building a fresh menu of new tastings, seminars, Chef’s Luncheons, demonstrations to complement the returning favourites – ensuring something for every appetite (and budget).

Top 25 Celebratory Reception once again returns as kick off to the signature CRUSH Gala Grand Tasting. New for this year, Crush will only take place once on Saturday, November 8. Taking the place of Crush Friday is the new Cellar Door; a tasting event to showcase those wines when you aim to impress. House Party-Best of BC and POURED return on the evening calendars in addition to Cornucopia Night Market this year offering a “Taste of the World”.

Wine seminars of the “fresh and new” include Sketches of Spain, The France You’ve Never Tasted , interactive seminar You Be the Judge and – what is probably the most apropos seminar for Whistler – Up North & Down Under. Another fun new addition to the lineup – and just in time for the holidays is the Fairmont Chateau Whistler’s “Art of” series includes sessions such as The Art of Holiday Cooking and The Art of Holiday Cocktails – just to name a few. Perpetual favourites Rhône Alone, Bubble-icious, and the fastest sell out of 2013 – Around the World in 80 Minutes are some of the returning sensations.

Apparent through the success of last years’ seminars, the love affair for cocktails, craft beers and hand-crafted spirits continues. As a result, the event masterminds are excited to present the return of the runaway hits Craft Beer for Wine Lovers and MarTEAni Party – a modern day twist on the traditional afternoon tea. Taste the Spirit: BC Craft Distilleries, Single Malt Seduction and A Crash Course in Belgian Beer are just a few of the new added to the seminar itinerary. With a Twist is the new evening spirit/cocktail tasting event where patrons choose their own adventure!

Last but definitely not least – the always popular culinary celebrations. Winery dinners hosted around the resort range from Nita Lake Lodge’s Aura restaurant with guest chef David Hawksworth and Black Hills Winery to Hy’s Steakhouse with Noble Ridge Vineyard to the return of Araxi’s Big Guns and their Intimate Winery Dinners. Bubbles and Brunch, Chef’s Luncheons and the Culinary Stage Series also return to showcase the talents of local and regional chefs; all of which consistently sell-out. Seminars with a culinary angle such as Wine & Cheese Pairing at the Westin’s Grill & Vine restaurant, Pairing Wine with Asian Cuisine and Sins of the Senses: A Charcuterie & Sherry Affair aim to offer solutions to that age old question – how do I pair food and drink? Winter festival hopes for funny money

Whistler’s LGBT ski week applies for municipal funding again to secure headline comedian

Dean Nelson is hoping the third time is the charm as his organization attempts to garner municipal-granted funds to expand the annual Whistler Pride and Ski Festival, previously known as WinterPRIDE.

Nelson, CEO and executive producer of the weeklong gay and lesbian ski and snowboard festival, applied recently for the third time in as many years for municipal Festivals, Events & Animation (FE&A) funding to help bring a big-name comedian to town for the winter festival.

“To help elevate the star power for both the LGBT and mainstream consumer,” said Nelson. “Having the funding will help reduce the financial risk in bringing in a major star. It would… help us sell the concept to future sponsors that will want to be associated with the festival and the star. It would help drive midweek visits, which is the biggest growth opportunity for both the festival and the resort.” >>Click to Read more

Please see Peter at the meeting point so you can get a 25% discount on tickets for friends and families.

SkiOUT hike GROUP DEPARTURE TIME – IS AT TEN O’CLOCK SHARP. Allow extra time, as Crankworx and Music Festivals could make it a little busier on the roads to Whistler!

Remember your Edge card, back/day pack, lunch, water, SUNSCREEN, camera, hiking/running shoes!! It should be a SPECTACULAR day! This trail is much easier and slightly shorter than the High Note trail but just as spectacular !! So make sure you make plans to come up for the day…or the weekend if that is an option for you!

Here are the details:

Parking – lots 4&5 are still free…parking lots 1/2/3 are $8/day.

Meeting spot – Whistler Village at the base of the Gondolas in front of Longhorns…watch for the hot men gathering around a rainbow flag!

Start Time – We leave at 10:00am SHARP so be there early! As a skiOUT hike group we head up the Whistler Gondola. If you are late catch up by taking the Blackcomb Village Chairs up and meet us at the Rendezvous Lodge around 11ish.

We stroll the Overlord Trail, a 6km return moderate level hike with some moderate elevation change. Stopping to have lunch around 1ish overlooking a spectacular mountain range (remember you’re packing your own lunch…so make it good!) After lunch we head back via beautiful 7th Heaven Meadows…alpine lake swim anyone? We will head back to the Rendezvous Lodge, grab the gondola chair down were we will an refreshing beverage at Merlins Pub to wind down the day… we expect to be back in the village around 5ish.

+ hiking shoes / sturdy leather runners / PLUS extra pair of dry socks

+ lunch – pack light but make it good!

+ did I mention water?! backpack (with a water platypus maybe?)

+ camera

+ suntan lotion – recommend SPF 30

+ bug spray (didn’t have any problems last weekend but just in case)

+ your EDGE card!

+ Please NO Heels, Open toe footwear, laptop bags (however stylish!) as they just won’t work! (we mentioned cause they have appeared on past hikes, so don’t be that guy/gal!)

If you renewed your Edge card for 2013/14 season you get a free sightseeing day. If you haven’t or have friends coming up (everyone welcome) then we can get 25% off (reg price $51) so make sure to see Peter before you buy any tickets so we can get that 25% off! So I think that’s about it… so lets hope for a sunny (or mostly sunny) day on Saturday August 9th, because Peter’s got a burning itch to go hiking! (and if that doesn’t clear up his itch… off to the doctor! )
