Vancouver Sports Day 2017

Vancouver Pride Sports Day + annual Pride Run/Walk 2017

Saturday, July 22nd, 2017 was the annual Vancouver Pride Run and Walk hosted by the Vancouver Frontrunners and the first annual Vancouver Pride Sports Day. Taking place at an exciting new venue for the Pride Society at the park at Second Beach. We loved the location. Super easy to walk, bike and drive. Close to the sea wall and the Run/Walk included the iconic views of Vancouver’s downtown and Coal Harbour.

What was exciting about this year’s Pride Sports Day that was different from previous years was the engagement of the various sports organizations including the Vancouver Whitecaps. The Pride Run/Walk emceed by Vancouver’s megamouthmedia, Barb Snelgrove with the assistance from SPIKE – the Whitecaps’ mascot. This year we had special greetings from Canada’s Prime Minister delivered by the Vancouver City Centre MP, Hon. Dr. Hedy Fry.

The Westend MLA Spencer Chandra Herbert also gave a welcome message from BC’s new Premier John Horgan. Sharing with the audience the work that he and his colleagues have worked hard in defending and enshrining Trans Equality in British Columbia.

The Vancouver Pride Run/Walk recorded 302 people cross the finish line, which is similar to previous years. However, direct donations for the charity run/walk was almost double from last year raising $8,655. The running club will have a few more donations come in as well as their final tally on registration which will also benefit their two benefactors: LOUD Youth Scholarship fund and the Pride Legacy Awards.

The Vancouver Frontrunner’s Pride Run/Walk is one of the few races which allow for Gender Variant. This year they had 5 people register in this non binary category. As sports and races like this become safer and more inclusive for Trans participants we will surely see more registering in future years.

This year the warm up was done by David Chacon from Health Initiative for Men. David was the perfect choice to get the runners and walkers excited to hit the sea wall so early in the morning.

WorldPride: Madrid Loves All

Madrid Love You - Photos
Click for more WorldPride Photos

Reflecting back on the week of WorldPride 2017 hosted in the city of Madrid, Spain – one word. WOW. Every two to three years one city is chosen by the InterPride Organization, an association of all Prides around the world, to host one WorldPride. The city of Madrid won the right to host this year’s festival as well as the annual EuroPride celebrations.

The city welcomed an estimated two million visitors from around the world. I think one of the most astonishing things was that the entire city centre was effectively free of car traffic.

Notably the police visibility was excellent without having the feeling of being watched, judged and “policed.” In fact there wasn’t one negative encounter with the police. Furthermore, the authorities did an exceptional job in keeping both the city and visitors safe. There were reports earlier in the week that the Madrid Police had discovered a possible terror plot. That was quickly resolved and people went on to enjoy the celebrations without any notice.

Additionally, the Madrid Metro also did an exceptional job of moving people in and out of the city with very little effort. The metro lines were packed but everyone was so patient and in good spirits. It made for travelling around the city effortless and you felt safe.

Rainbows.

Yes, the late Gilbert Baker would have been so proud to see how the city of Madrid really embraced the iconic gay symbol of diversity and inclusion. Memorable Rainbows included: an entire building and Chueca metro station wrapped with pride, courtesy of Netflix Espania; city monuments glowing at night with the rainbow spectrum to the hand tied 600,000+ ribbons creating a massive Rainbow Flag hung at city hall. The number of corporate sponsors and local businesses eager to show their pride was remarkable.

Live sites.

The Spaniards do know how to put on a good show and know how to party. The city of Madrid had 7 live sites that hosted various concerts, dance parties, and public performances. Some of the main attractions included the Puerta del Sol stage where the crowning of Mr. Gay Espana at the Grand Finale of this national beauty pageant; Plaza de Alcalá, rarely used for events, was the main stage of Pride where some of the best Eurosong Super Stars performed including Kate Ryan (Belgium), Conchina Wirsch (Austria), and Loreen (Sweden) just to name a few!

Dance.

All the gay clubs and streets were raging as you would expect. However all of the mega dance parties put on by various mega producers like WE Parties were 45-60 minutes out of town. An estimate 250,000 partiers took to these venues outside of the city centre.

Food.

No big surprise but Madrid love to eat. Although the city may normally eats late, the week of pride many of the restaurants would run out of things as the evening progressed. The sheer volume of people was amazing. Did you know Madrid is home to the oldest continuously running restaurant in the world? Restavrante Botin established in 1725 serving up Madrid’s traditional cuisine. Some of the traditional foods include: calamari sandwich bars, churros con chocolate, and Oreja a la Plancha. Oreja what? Oreja a la Plancha is literally “pan-seared pig’s ear and is often sprinkled with salt or paprika. It was actually quite good, chased with a Spanish beer.

Educate.

WorldPride opened the week with the Madrid Summit – an LGBT+ Human Rights Conference bringing over 200 guest speakers from all reaches of the planet. It was heartbreaking to listen to some of the struggles the LGBT community is facing in same parts of the world. Moreover It was quite inspiring how some community groups are rising up and making a brighter tomorrow. Some of the notable presenters included Canada’s own LGBT advisor to the Prime Minister, Randy Boissonnault, EAGLE’s executive director Helen Kennedy and the very passionate closing remarks from Gopi Shankar Madurai. Gopi spoke about the Intersexed community and the importance of remembering “…the diversity within diversity.”

Final note.

WorldPride Madrid was an absolute glowing success. The city showed that over two million people from all spectrums of gender, sexuality, race, religion and identity can come together and celebrate our differences and find our commonality. It was a week of inspiration, a week of love, and a week of compassion.

Save the date: The next World Pride will coincide with the 50th anniversary of Stonewall in New York City in June 2019. I can hardly wait!

LGBT Tourism Leader of the Year

Dean Nelson named LGBT Tourism Leader of the Year

Travel Gay Canada, the nation’s LGBT tourism association, names Whistler Pride’s CEO, Dean Nelson, Tourism Leader of the Year.

On Thursday, June 15th at the fifth-annual LGBT Summit of the Americas hosted by the Canadian Gay Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (CGLCC) in Toronto, Ontario, Travel Gay Canada recognized Canada’s LGBT Travel champions. Dean Nelson, CEO of Alpenglow Production and Executive Producer of the annual Whistler Pride and Ski Festival was recognized as the nation’s LGBT Tourism Leader of the year.

In an interview with Brandon Barrett of Whistler’s Pique Newsmagazine, the paper reported:

Nelson was instrumental in establishing the Olympics’ first-ever LGBTQ pavilion, Pride House, for the 2010 Winter Games in Whistler and Vancouver. That led to similar venues at the London 2012 Olympics, the 2015 Pan-Am Games in Toronto, and other international sporting events. Nelson was also a vocal presence ahead of the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, where attempts to establish a Pride House were struck down by Russian officials. However, thanks to lobbying from Nelson and other gay rights activists, sexual orientation was added to the Olympic Charter’s anti-discrimination clause following the 2014 Games.

It’s just a wonderful recognition from my peers and some of my mentors to acknowledge some of the work I’ve done over the last 10 years,” Nelson said. “It’s a pretty big moment for me.

Since taking over the 2006 festival with just two weeks notice, Nelson has transformed Whistler Pride into one of North America’s largest gay ski weeks. The municipality has been declaring Whistler Pride Week to coincide with the event since 2012, and in September, will unveil two rainbow-coloured Pride crosswalks on Main Street. Orlando Reflection

Orlando Reflection

Earlier this month I had the opportunity to travel to Miami for the 4th World Outgames. Here they had a memorial for the Orlando fallen. This was part of my Orlando reflection on our current LGBT environment in light of the changes at the White House in the USA. We have witnessed first hand how quickly some of our rights can be stripped away and programs/funding cut when the leadership of a government changes.

As I continue with my Orlando reflection I travelled to Ottawa for the annual Canadian Centre of Gender and Sexual Diversity (CCGSD) conference. Here I heard the words from Liberal MP, Dr. Hedy Fry share her thoughts on how we as the people can never be complacent with our fight for LGBT equal human rights. It was the first time in Canadian history, that all major political parties came together to discuss LGBT rights and the importance in Gender and Sexual diversity. Needless to say it was quite inspiring to see despite party lines there was some agreement on making tomorrow brighter, safer and more inclusive.

I leave you with the following Orlando reflection from one of our greatest LGBT heroes, Gilbert Baker – the creator of the Rainbow Flag. Gilbert prior to his passing wrote a few letters for the Canadian Centre of Gender and Sexual Diversity to use throughout the year.

Today marks the first anniversary of the largest mass shooting in US history.
Even in writing these words, I pause.
In a way, I can’t believe it was our community that was attacked. But in truth, after everything I have been through, I am not surprised.
The Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando, FL reminds us that the gains we have made are never permanent. We are each required to constantly participate in a process of renewal.
Today, we can’t just only remember the victims of this brutal attack.
We NEED to #HonorThemWithAction.
The CCGSD will be honoring them by training volunteers at Medicine Hat Pride to organize & run workshops that challenge homophobia, transphobia & transmisogyny in regional schools.
By building capacity in Medicine Hat, Alberta, we hope that the region will be better able to do more to address the hate and discrimination that exists.
But you are probably thinking: What can I do?

Not sure? That’s ok. Being an activist isn’t always easy or obvious. For me, it has required a lot of work, that has included looking inward and challenging the oppression that I put out in the world too.
While it might seem simple, make a donation to the CCGSD and support their work in Alberta’s bible belt. Or better yet, become a monthly donor. Those monthly donations help the organization plan for the future and build new programs. Even something a small as $2 a month really helps!
Want to do more? Why not volunteer? You can volunteer (like I do) with the CCGSD or any number of community organizations across Canada. Also, check out honorthemwithaction.org, to see what more you can do!
But mostly, be the change you want see in our world. Learn more, read more, and listen more.
Challenge yourself to practice kindness, love and respect.
Your in action,
Gilbert Baker
